Categories: Interrelation/Interconnection

None of the elements were conceived as independent ideals but intended rather, to be overlapped in supporting each other where applicable in ensuring the best possible outcome for students. As such they can be group enumerated or categorized for,

i. Elements directly affecting student learning and academic performance – access, literacy, communication (3)
ii. Elements affecting the overall school environment and student behavior – etiquette, rights & responsibilities, and security (3)
iii. Affect student life outside the school environment – commerce, health & wellness, and law. (3)

Principles: S3 Framework (Safe, Savvy and Social)

The Digital Citizenship further distills down the nine foundational elements into three guiding principles: Safe, Savvy and Social (or S3).
The beliefs of S3 are a way to support and reinforce the framework of the elements of digital citizenship. Each element encompasses three levels of support (Safe, Savvy and Social) which could (or should) be taught as soon as our children can first pick up a device and start to interact with it. They are summarized as follows:
A. Safety focuses on protecting yourself and protecting others and creates the base of digital citizenship.
B. Savvy focuses on the concepts around educating yourself and connecting with others. These concepts build upon the concepts of Safety.
C. Social is the guiding principle that commits to helping everyone make decisions exemplifying our commitment to respect ourselves and respect others. It is here that we fully realize the possibilities of the online experience.

Importance to the Author

The author’s organization’s positional responsibilities mandates placing premier importance on all the nine elements but one. That is the element of digital commerce does not reside within the author’s portfolio. The remaining are critically upheld and ascribed to in ensuring the organization’s personnel and clients are model digital citizens.
